The Director and the Buddy Factor
The commentary track for Swimming with Sharks—that’s the Buddy Factor or The Boss for some of you erroneous foreigners—is one of the best I’ve heard. George Huang (sole speaker and a damn good one) admitted he was the least qualified to direct his own script and how that affected the work. Kevin Spacey screamed at him because of his usage of a crappy monitor, Benicio Del Toro screamed at him for not being able to convey what he wanted him to do. People lost their jobs becuase of the movie. But they did gain a producer credit. And this commentary track was something Huang had to fight with the studio to do. What were they thinking? It contains more useful information and amusing anecdotes in the first ten minutes than an entire producer-commentary track for a blockbuster action.
And the movies great too. To quote the pink flamingos in a Wonderfalls episode: “Get off your ass” and rent it if you haven’t seen it already.
