Catching up with comics #58c
So, due to being away from it all more or less for some time this means things just flew beside without me noticing.
Leave it to Chance – Shaman’s Rain—James Robinson & Paul Smith. My first foarey down into the mind of James Robinson—unless you count some story in the X-Men, but I don’t and I might mix him up with some other fellow—and I like it. It’s trivial in the best meaning of the word without any negative connotations, entertainment of the old school when comics where fun fun fun and filled with adventure.
Alias vol.1—Brian Michael Bendis & Michael Gaydos. I like Bendis and I like Alias. A cynical look at the whole hero myth is needed in the Marvel U. Perhaps it arrived a little later than it needed to, but that fact that it exist(-ed) is enough. Sort of. DC has had their comics with darker undercurrents a long while now even if one excludes the Vertigo imprint. Hopefully, they’ll continue to put out Max titles such as this and let it mature and evolve. But I won’t hold my breath.
The Hood—Brian K. Vaughan & Kyle Hotz. Damn. There is something to Marvel’s Max imprint after all. The question that bugs me though is why this isn’t an ongoing series? I love this. It’s dark, twisted, filled with humour and quite frankly great in all aspects. The fact the it runs with the two different levels of meaning in the title as well as actually allow the people to be dark and not always pleasant—they fuck up and do mean things to each other—makes it stand out even from Alias. (Boo: you want to buy the trade paperback. I know you do.)
