carbonated ink : one man's struggle against boredom

Small things and The Goon 0

[]    comics : 6. May 2004, 11:11

I’ve been reading comicblogs more and more. Mainly becuase they’re good, but also becaus they have something most other blogs lack—a neat sense of humour. I say most other blogs because most of them are rather boring. There’s a big number of good blogs out there, but in the neverending flood they tend to stay hidden behind the others.

Anyway. over at Progressive Ruin I found out that there’s a Shield comic. More of mean Vic and his gang. To make a comic book out of the Shield makes a bit more sense than CSI—at least to me and in spite of show popularity.

Eric Powell’s The Goon: Rough Stuff. Having never read the new Dark Horse issues but heard a lot of them I picked up this. And I can agree with Powells introduction. It is a bit crude. It’s a bit too unsubtle and the humour is rough and very unpolished. But as I read it, I can’t help but to think that this is a feature.

Far too many comic books tries to be smart and well, very postmodern (it’s not a word, I swear!). This makes the Goon the perfect antidote. It is what it is. It sometimes borders on very stupid, but then it’s also laugh out funny. It in the cowbell category and quite frankly, that’s not so bad is it?
