The 101ers are quite interesting. While they didn’t have the fierce and dirty sound of the Clash, they do sound like they did towards the end. It’s almost makes one wonder why Joe Strummer disbanded them to be in the Clash. Of course, who wanted to play old boring rock when punk was on the horizon? I can’t argue against Strummer’s decision either, as I think he needed that energy surge and he couldn’t get that with the 101ers—especially since the pub rock scene was a bit older than them in general and they didn’t quite fit in.
The earlier Clash is far more fun to listen to but that doesn’t mean that the 101ers are bad. Far from it. Why it hasn’t been reprinted earlier is a mystery.
