That Pale Little Spider

[]    comics : 19. April 2005, 10:54

One of the best superheroism penned by Greg Rucka comes from Marvel? Whuwouldathunkit? You would assume, like I did, that the things over at DC would fit him better, but apart from Gotham Central and perhaps some of his Detective Comics he really has failed to deliver over there. Somehow, his thriller impulses doesn’t click with how their universe is lined up.

His Black Widow miniseries manage to come close to the darker side of Queen and Country and actually work. This might be because it is a spythriller at heart as well as his own made-up main character a rarely used character from Devin Greyson I think and not one of the usual iconified spandexmodels.

I will not use the word “ironic” about the darkness in Pale Little Spider, but once I read it I finally understood what a shame it is that Marvels MAX imprint is so abused. Things like this is far superior than the regular titles that now gets the extreme makeover treatment. Killing characters to prove the point of the bad guy is so… silly and pointless. Especially when it’s possible to do so in other and better ways.

A Marvel comic that contains depravity, leather, naked people, and twisted human begings without any power-bullshit. I don’t think I’d believed this comic existed if someone had just told me about it.

Something must be said for the art—Igor Korday is a bit of an acquired taste. Kind of like whisky actually, once you get hocked on it, you’re stuck there and want to saviour it as much as possible. The man really should have more work for quality titles. Can’t wait to read Smoke.

  2. I seem to recall I enjoyed Gotham Central, didn´t I? You know this better than me.

I should probably tell you Boo seemed pretty disgusted by me when I said Watchmen was no more than “good enough”.

How do you feel about that one?

  3. Ola: Watchmen is really good when you pay attention to everything in it, but it is rather overrated. Also, I think certain parts of it hasn’t aged that well.

(The Invisibles kicks its sorry ass up and down the street. But then again, the Invisibles kicks everythings ass.)

Johan: I’ll see if I can provide some images from it to convince you.

  6. Nicklas: Boo mention the “you have to pay attention to the details” aspect too. I did read it closely and slow. For me it was more to do with a lack of goose bump-moments. The Sandman opened up in the last chapter of the first volume and we got a little bit closer after that, step by step, and the Invisibles worked both as a whole – a fucked up whole, but still – and in the details. The Watchmen however started good but then refused to take the next step. It still was good. Just not jumping about-screaming-good.

If Boo reads this, please tell me why I´m wrong and should read it again.

  7. What´s that about, then?
