Mobfire
Johnny Bacardi made me look up Mobfire with these words:
You should look up Mobfire, the Vertigo miniseries Pleece illustrated in the mid-90s. It mixes British gangsters and magic, and even has a John Constantine cameo. I think it’s the best thing I’ve seen from Pleece.
I don’t agree. Warren Pleece isn’t near what he is in Dead Enders. In layouts, yes, but he’s always good in layouts. Perhaps the ink by Richard Case and Cameron Stewart appeals to me more and corrects what I don’t like, but really, I don’t think so. I’d like to believe that Pleece has evolved his skill under these five years. Because he kicked some arse in Dead Enders and I will defend that to the brink of my existance.
Mobfire as a whole on the other hand is really good, although somewhat slow and kind of unfocused. Especially in the beginning where the script lacked punch and at least I never really felt anything for any of the characters. And just to make sure I’m not beating down on the art, some of the spreads are just stunning here too.
