Is that an axe in your pocket or...
Kung-fu Hustle is just like the previous outings of Stephen Chow, a delight in humour. Sure, it’s not as funny as Shaolin Soccer, but did anyone really expect that? No, I thought so. KFH is on the other hand a lot more beauitful. CGI belnds in remarkably well and the cinamatography is so stunning that I had a hard time to blink.
Like when Chows character tires to prove how bad-ass he is to a bunch of poor people—he wants to be in the Axe Gang just because it’s cooler to be a bad guy. “That old woman with the onions! You look real though. Wanna fight me. I let you hit me first.” So she does, he coughs blood after the first punch and backs off.
Add typical kung fu homour like the toad-form (the fighter jumps around and blows upp his cheeks) and more bisarre things such as Hulk or Spider-Man homages, and well… It can’t fail. The Axe Gang looks more tough and New Yorky than in the movie a last year by the half-assed Scrosese—even that is a homage but one that surpases the original.
Yes, the movie is very silly at times, it’s a bit uneven in teh beginning as one isn’t really certain if he’s trid to make a real action movie or if it’s a normal Chow action-comedy.
