carbonated ink : one man's struggle against boredom

skrull kull krew

[]    comics : 4. February 2005, 12:42

How the fuck did Marvel autorize this? This shouldn’t be a complaint, but the whole series reaks of AD2000 from the beginning to the end. It’s fastpaced, really fastpaced in a way Marvel hasn’t been since the eighties at least.

Scriptwise, I wonder if not Mark Millar won over Grant Morrison. The superpower-giving hamburger-virus is pure Grant, as is a few lines here and there but most of the other is more like something from Millar. Since he does fast action comics pretty well, this suits the thing but I miss the insanity of what an unhinged Morrison could give us. Okej, the Hyndra-story was also a bit more Morrisony at places—especially the pen.

Steve Yeowell is as always really good, and I think he’s far better than most of the slick and polished Marvel-artists. A shame he hasn’t been used more by any of the big companies—then again, it’s probably really boring to draw a three-issue storyarc extended to the double. Lots of panels where nothing happens. More art by Yeowell is i win in my book anyway.

In the end, Skrull Kill Krew is probably a lot closer to the bottom of what Morrison has done and about average for Millar. Still though, the ultra-violence is quite entertaining.
