carbonated ink : one man's struggle against boredom

Burst!

[]    comics : 21. October 2004, 15:14

Been pretty busy with other stuff lately. (Classes at the big U as well as the first season of Arrested Development on dvd.) Så let’s summary this:

  • Texarkana (Patrick Neighly & Donny Hadiwidjaja, Mad Yak Press) Holy statelines, Batman! When I tired to describe the cop unit (a judge, a lawyer, a prosecutor and an executioner) he said “Like a schizoid Judge Dredd?” Which you can say, except that this is good and the characters actually have feelings and thoughts and not just a lot of mindless action. Recommended. (Neighly previously wrote Anarchy for the masses: the disinformation guide to the Invisibles—which is required reading if only because of the Grant Morrison interview.)
  • District X #6 (David Hine & Lan Medina, Marvel) While it started out really good, the last two issues of this six-issue storyline contained a bit too much padding. If it had been four or perhaps five issues it would have worked a whole lot better. Still, Hine manage to use Marvels write-for-the-trade-paperback-policy better than most other. So perhaps they should just abandon that thought and actually just go back to letting the story decide the number of issues? In the end though it’s sort of good but still a letdown.
  • Losers #16 (Andy Diggle & Jock, DC/Vertigo) I can’t find a fault in it except that maybe the backstory about the treason shouldn’t have been told. But I don’t know yet, since tha flashback only started and isn’t done. I loved how Jock did the flashback, the art is amazing. As usual with Jock. Damn him.
  • Ex Machina #5 (Brian K Vaughan & Tony Harris, DC/Wildstorm) Wohooo! Better than last issue, this has less padding and a satisfying end to the storyarc. But hell, Vaugahn even manages to do padding interesting so…
