Demo #9 & 1

[]    comics : 4. September 2004, 13:37

Number nine of Demo (AiT/PlanetLar) is the polar opposite. No powers, two people who don’t really care for one another and there’s much mess background in the panels. Many people are praising this and while it’s still a damn fine issue, it’s not one of the best.

Becky Cloonans cover is amazing though. Unfocused background without any blur? I feel as if I could hug her for this—because damn it looks good.

That they both were rather unlikable and said stupid things is also a good thing. That they went from being sweet to mean in an instant. But in the end, the story didn’t move me. Don’t know why, I really don’t. If I were to divide it into small pieces, I would like them all just fine. But somehow it just doesn’t click.

So let’s do the first issue too then. The Akira issue, but far better in my opinion. Cloonans art isn’t as crisp as it use to be, but that suits the story. Oh, and the walls on the public toilet in the Gas-Food-place? Brilliant in that it really looks like an awful place to be. While not much happens really except that they go to New York—it is at the same time one of the best examples I can come up with of decompressed storytelling that actually works because of the resonance.
